The role of sexual desire, or libido, in our lives extends beyond just pleasure. It's an essential part of self-care and can be a key indicator of our holistic well-being. As renowned wellness physician Dr. Taz Bhatia, once said “I think libido is a vital sign, another way of checking in on the body and the body talking to us,” So, how can you better understand your libido, and enhance it to increase your sexual pleasure?

What even is libido?

Libido, is often referred to as "sexual drive" or "sexual desire", and is a term used to describe the energy or drive behind our sexual desires, fantasies, and behaviours. Your libido can be affected by a variety of factors, including physical health, mental health, medications, lifestyle, and relationships. It’s not only women that experience changes in libido, men can also experience it too! Always remember that everyone's libido is different, and there's no "normal" level of sexual desire. What matters most is whether you are satisfied with your level of sexual pleasure and whether it's causing you any worry. If you are experiencing a change in libido that is causing you concern, it may be helpful to speak with a sex coach.

Everyone’s libido is different 

Sexual desire varies greatly from person to person and can change over time due to various factors, including age, stress levels, time of the month, health conditions and much more. We get it, sometimes you might not feel in the mood and that's totally okay! However, it is important that you understand your libido in order to recognise what is normal for YOU and be aware of any significant changes in your attitude towards sexual pleasure. Acknowledging the importance of libido and listening to what your body is trying to tell you is the first step towards understanding and managing your sexual health. Always listen to your body, it knows best!

Onto the fun stuff! Feeling like your libido is a little low, not feeling it lately, or simply looking for ways to ramp up your sex drive naturally? We’re here to help, and to get started we have put down some of our favourite ways to boost your libido that is easy to adopt into your daily routine.

Exercise

It’s no surprise that regular physical activity enhances your overall health, body image, and mood. Exercise improves your blood circulation, including to your sexual organs, and releases endorphins, the “feel-good” hormone. You know that feeling after you’ve had a good workout and are on a natural high, the birds are chirping and the sun is shining, ahhhh. We see you nodding. To get your endorphins going and your libido up, try an activity you enjoy and do it for at least 30 minutes everyday of the week - you’ll see your libido ramp up in no time. 

Nutrition

We know - easier said than done! However, it's true that eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins boosts your overall health and energy levels which can, in fact, boost your libido. There are certain foods in particular that have aphrodisiac properties, which are foods that are believed to stimulate or enhance sexual desire or pleasure (stay tuned for our next blog post on this!). Some of our favourite aphrodisiacs are life's best-kept secrets; dark chocolate, oysters, and strawberries. Hydration is also key for all bodily functions, including sexual activity - drink your water and eat your chocolate ladies!
